A VAT ID, a tax number and an EORI number are three different identifiers, and Amazon sellers in Europe are often asked for more than one. This guide explains what each one is, who needs it and where it is used, so you do not mix them up in a registration form.
VAT ID (VAT number)
The VAT ID is the number used for VAT in a given country. It appears on invoices and is what customers and Amazon use to check that you are registered. It is issued per country. You can check EU VAT IDs in the official VIES system.
Tax number
A tax number is the national identifier a tax authority uses for your company, for example for income or corporate tax. In some countries it is separate from the VAT ID, and registration forms may ask for both.
EORI number
An EORI number identifies an economic operator for customs. You generally need one if you import goods into or export goods out of the EU in your own name. It is not a VAT number, even though both may be requested in the same process.
Which one does Amazon ask for?
Amazon can request VAT IDs for the countries where you store stock or sell, and customs information for imports. Requirements change, so follow the instructions in your seller account. For the bigger question of where you need to register, read do you need a VAT number to sell on Amazon in Europe.
Common mistakes
- Entering the tax number in the VAT ID field or the other way round.
- Assuming an EORI replaces a VAT registration.
- Using details that do not match the company name on your Amazon account.
