e-Residency does not make you a tax resident of Estonia or give you the right to live there: it is a digital identity that lets you set up and manage an Estonian company online. If you live in Spain you keep your tax obligations in Spain, and that is the key when comparing it with being an autónomo.
Informational guide reviewed in October 2026. It does not replace personalised tax advice.
What e-Residency is and is not
It is a digital ID card issued by Estonia. It lets you sign documents and manage an OÜ remotely. It is not a passport, not residency, and it does not by itself change where you are taxed as a person.
Spanish autónomo: the basics
You pay personal income tax on your profits and contribute to Social Security. It is simple to set up and to explain to Amazon, but your personal assets answer for the business debts. Also see when to move from autónomo to a company.
OÜ with e-Residency: the basics
The company is a separate legal person. In Estonia, profits kept in the company are not taxed until they are distributed; see 0% on reinvested profits. That does not stop Spain from taxing what you receive, or from assessing where the company is really managed.
Risks to check if you live in Spain
- If you run the OÜ from Spain, the tax authority may consider that effective management is here.
- Rules against using foreign companies to defer tax may apply.
- You still have to report income, accounts and possible withholdings depending on your case.
That is why there is no single answer: it depends on where you live, where decisions are made and how much you invoice.
When each option usually makes sense
- Autónomo: moderate turnover, you want simplicity and do not need to separate assets.
- OÜ: international business, partners or residence outside Spain, and clear advice on the tax risk.
